How to sign a PDF without printing it

You almost never need a printer to sign a PDF. Here is the quickest way on each device, and what to do when someone else has to sign too.

On iPhone or iPad

Open the PDF in Files or Mail, tap Markup, then add a signature. Our guide to signing a PDF on iPhone has each step.

On Android

What is built in depends on your phone, so a PDF app is usually simplest. See how to sign a PDF on Android.

On a Mac

Open the PDF in Preview, choose Tools, then Annotate, then Signature. You can draw on the trackpad or hold a signed sheet of paper up to the camera.

On Windows or in any browser

Adobe Acrobat Reader has a free Fill & Sign tool, and Microsoft Edge can draw on a PDF. You can also sign a PDF online in Klevo’s web app without installing anything.

When someone else needs to sign

Do not email a PDF around and ask people to print it. In Klevo, choose Request signatures and share one link. Signers open it in a browser and sign with no app or account. You get the signed copy back with a certificate page. Details are in our electronic signature guide.

A drawing or a real signature record?

Dropping an image of your signature on a page is fine for a casual form. For an agreement, a record of who signed and when is much stronger, so see what the law says where you are.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. iPhone has Markup built in, and on Android a PDF app such as Klevo, available on Google Play, lets you draw or type a signature.

Do I need to scan the page after signing?

No. Signing the digital file directly avoids printing and scanning, and the result is sharper.
