How to fill out a PDF form on your phone

Most PDF forms can be finished on a phone in a few minutes. What to do depends on whether the form has real fields, and whether it is a scan.

Forms with fields you can tap

If tapping a box brings up the keyboard, type your answers directly. iPhone’s Files app handles this, and so do most PDF apps on Android.

Forms with no fields

If nothing happens when you tap, the form has no fields. You can place text over it with Markup on iPhone or Adobe Acrobat Reader’s free Fill & Sign. For a text-based PDF you can also use Klevo’s fill and sign: type something like “name Sam Lee, date 5 November” and the AI writes it into the document. Always check the result before you send it.

Scanned and official forms

A scan is an image and Klevo does not run OCR, so use Markup or Acrobat for those. Klevo’s AI also rebuilds the document, so if an authority requires its own original form, fill in that form with Markup or Acrobat.

Sign and send

Once it is filled in, add your signature, then download or share the PDF. If someone else needs to sign, send them a link.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I type in my PDF form?

It probably has no form fields, which is common with scanned forms. Use a tool that can place text on the page, such as Markup or Acrobat Reader.

Can I fill out a W-9 on my phone?

Yes, with Markup or Acrobat Reader on the official PDF. Klevo’s tax form templates are simplified recreations, so use the official form where it is required.
